Honda has taken a step towards making power grids more efficient with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.

Honda has taken a step towards making power grids more efficient with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, which enables a company to monitor a power grid to determine if it needs additional power sources or power demands that are capable of absorbing transitional power sources. This technology could make owning a plug-in electric vehicle more effective than before.

The University of Delaware provided the research that Honda built its V2G technology off of, which NRG Energy, Inc. already supports. This research, which was the world’s first revenue-generating V2G project, enabled the partners to demonstrate different aspects of selling energy storage from vehicles into the PJM Interconnection Regulation Market. A Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid with V2G capabilities was provided to the University’s Science, Technology and Advanced Research Campus to use during research.

“This technology has the potential to support both a cleaner and more efficient power grid and a more positive ownership experience for EV customers,” said Steven Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “With V2G technology, a network of PEVs becomes essentially a distributed energy storage system. It makes for an even stronger value equation for plug-in vehicles, with benefits for both the community and the vehicle user.”
