Today Honda announced a forthcoming $85 million investment in the Honda Manufacturing of Alabama (HMA) plant located in Lincoln, Alabama.

In a statement, the Japanese automaker asserted that the money would fund the first of a multi-phase project meant to improve the facility’s vehicle manufacturing flexibility, while also strengthening the logistic efficiency for future models and preparing for future technologies.

HMA manufactures four different light truck products for Honda and its luxury brand, Acura. In addition to building the Acura MDX crossover, HMA is the sole producer of the Honda Odyssey minivan, the Pilot SUV, and the Ridgeline pickup truck.

A portion of the $85 million cash infusion will go towards building an expansion at the south end of Line 1 for HMA’s vehicle assembly operations. Honda says that it expects to complete construction for this initial phase of the project by 2018.

“This significant financial investment in our Lincoln facility will enhance Honda’s manufacturing efficiency and flexibility to help us meet strong customer demand for our products and prepare us for future opportunities in our industry,” HMA President Jeff Tomko said in a statement.

In addition to building the Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, and MDX, HMA is also responsible for producing the V6 engines that power each vehicle. More than 4,500 workers are employed at the $2.2 billion, 3.7-million-square-foot facility, which has the capacity to produce 340,000 vehicles and engines each year.

Including this project, HMA’s total capital investment since 2011 exceeds $750 million. Over 450 jobs have been added in Lincoln during that time, as well.
