Today Honda announced that two of its automobile manufacturing plants in Ohio and one in Indiana have earned ENERGY STAR certification from the Environmental Protection Agency. This is the tenth consecutive year that the Ohio-based facilities have received this designation from the EPA, and the fourth straight year that Honda Manufacturing of Indiana has done so.

ENERGY STAR certification means that the plants—in East Liberty and Marysville, Ohio, and Greensburg, Indiana—have met strict performance levels set by the EPA in order to be among the top 25% of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency. On average, such plants generally consume 35% less energy than non-certified operations, and contribute 35% fewer greenhouse gas emissions, as well.

“Every Honda facility considers the energy efficiency of its operations, but especially in our manufacturing plants as these operations can consume so much energy,” said Karen Heyob, the leader of Honda’s environmental sustainability initiatives in North America. “We have found that progress in this area comes when we involve every associate in the process, and not relying on someone with a certain job or responsibility to handle it. When everyone involved considers energy efficiency and how they can help the environment, results improve.”

Last year, both of Honda’s Ohio pants upgraded their energy efficiency, despite already qualifying for ENERGY STAR certification. The Marysville plant built a new 138,000-square foot consolidation center that features high-efficiency HVAC systems, LED lighting, and direct-fired water boilers, and also introduced hydrogen fuel cell-powered tow motors and forklifts. The East Liberty plant also installed new LED lighting, in addition to replacing a large water heater with one that is more fuel-efficient, and plans to add high-efficiency 1350-ton chillers this year.

Honda’s Greensburg, Indiana plant, the automaker’s youngest US plant at just seven years of age, transitioned to LED high-bay lighting in 2015, and designed and constructed a recent expansion that closely followed the guidelines of the Honda North America green factory assessment tool.
