Two of Honda’s Ohio manufacturing plants have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR certification for the eighth year in a row for rising to meet the agency’s strict energy efficiency-performance levels. Additionally, Honda’s Greensburg, Indiana plant earned ENERGY STAR certification for the second consecutive year.

“We continually strive to reduce the environmental impact of our operations by improving our energy efficiency,” said Karen Heyob, Director of Facility Management at Honda North America, in the automaker’s official press release. “We strive to build a culture that encourages all associates to consider ways to make their job process more energy efficient, particularly focusing on shutting off equipment when it isn’t needed.”

The two Ohio plants, located in Marysville and East Liberty, only grew their already-outstanding commitment to environmental savvy in 2013.  Marysville concluded a multi-year project whose goal was to eliminate a central steam plant, with the intention to transition to better localized alternatives.  East Liberty initiated operations in its new on-site parts consolidation center; this move effectively reduced the plant’s fuel usage by 483,000 gallons and cut CO2 emissions by 4.9 metric tons on an annual basis.

Honda Manufacturing of Indiana LLC just marked its fifth anniversary in 2013; the plant is the newest such facility Honda has created in the United States, making its early ENERGY STAR certification consistency a promising sign for the future ahead.  The Greensburg plant improved efficiency by 15 percent throughout 2013 while increasing to a two-shift operation schedule.

The Marysville and East Liberty Auto Plants are responsible for the production of the Accord, CR-V, and Earth Dreams Technology engines among others.  The Greensburg Assembly Plant manufactures the Civic Sedan, Civic Natural Gas, and Acura ILX.

“The EPA congratulates Honda for earning ENERGY STAR certification for its manufacturing facilities,” said Jean Lupinacci, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial & Industrial Branch. “Its efforts to reduce carbon pollution and save money through increased energy efficiency demonstrate that it is a leader in protecting our environment and strengthening our economy.”
