Today Honda announced that the Honda Silicon Valley Lab, its global open innovation hub contained within Honda R&D Americas, will soon become its own brand new company, to be known as “Honda Innovations.”

As Honda R&D Innovations, Inc., the company will expand its areas of focus beyond vehicles and seek out transformative collaborations within all areas of Honda’s activities. The company will remain located in Mountain View, California, and will operate globally to partner with innovators worldwide, ranging from small startups, to global brands, to various design and development communities.

Honda also created a new video to serve as an introduction for the company:

Nick Sugimoto, who was the senior program director of Honda Silicon Valley Lab, will take over as CEO of Honda Innovations.

Honda says the new company will focus on the areas of Connected Vehicle/Internet of Things (IoT) services, Human Machine Interface, Machine Intelligence/Robotics, Connected Services, Personal Mobility, Sharing Economy, and Industrial Innovation. Honda Innovations will also facilitate discussions on technical collaboration with Waymo, to apply Waymo’s self-driving technology to Honda vehicles.

“We’re witnessing a convergence of technologies that will transform mobility, create new business opportunities, and change the way we manufacture products,” said new Honda Innovations CEO Nick Sugimoto. “By looking broadly across technology areas and partnering with innovators across the globe, we can create products and services that enhance the lives of our customers.”

Honda says that two of the open innovation programs established as part of Honda’s Silicon Valley Lab, Honda Developer Studio and Honda Xcelerator, will “continue to serve as catalysts within the newly established Honda Innovations to discover and experiment with new technologies and business concepts.”
