As anticipated, Honda had an excellent 2016, today reporting an all-time annual sales record of 1,637,942 Honda and Acura vehicles. That represented a 3.2% increase in sales over its 2015 efforts, which was the company’s previous high water mark.

Of course, as has been the case for a while, closer inspection of that number reveals a Tale of Two Cities-type divide between the Honda and Acura Divisions. While record annual Honda sales of 1,476,582 vehicles in 2016 represented a 4.8% increase, Acura’s total annual sales of just 161,360 units represented an 8.9% downturn.

“2016 was a very rewarding year for American Honda in which we set a second consecutive all-time sales record while maintaining our unique focus on retail sales to individual buyers,” said executive John Mendel. “We are going to build on this success with a continued focus on strong products and sound sales strategies that increase quality and value for our customers.”

Honda Division finished its record year with a record December, moving 143,329 models last month, led by 37,778 units of the bestselling CR-V. For the whole of 2016, the Civic, Accord, and CR-V all combined to easily surpass 1 million units total for the fourth consecutive year.

“It was an amazing year for the Honda brand with our product lineup full of industry best models,” said Honda Division executive Jeff Conrad. “Our strong December also builds momentum for 2017 which is shaping up to be another great year as still more new Honda products will give customers exciting new choices.”

Acura actually had a better December 2016 than 2015, with best-ever monthly sales of 12,188 units. Still, it was the end to what has largely been a disappointing year for the luxury brand.

“With Acura trucks leading the way and the TLX performing strongly in a challenging market for sedans, we were able to finish our 30th anniversary year on a strong note,” said Jon Ikeda, Acura Division vice president and general manager. “We’re excited to carry this momentum, with a strong future vision for Acura, into the new year.”
