A Jeep Wrangler-based pickup truck is in the works
If you want a pickup truck, it’s likely you want it to be rough and tough—a type of vehicle that Jeep is known for producing. Because of the American carmaker’s reputation, it comes as no surprise that a Jeep Wrangler-based pickup truck is much anticipated. Only hours after rumors of a Jeep pickup truck began swirling, Automotive News has received confirmation that the pickup truck is in the works.
The report claims that the vehicle is currently under development. Independent sources have told Automotive News that the Wrangler-based pickup truck will debut in either the 2017 or 2018 model year after the next-generation Wrangler. While inquiries with official Jeep representatives have been responded to with a “no comment,” the aforementioned sources claim that the Jeep Wrangler pickup truck is set for production at the company’s assembly plant in Toledo, Ohio.
Currently, the Toledo plant has two facilities—one that produces the Wrangler and another that manufactures the unibody Jeep Cherokee. Sergio Marchionne, the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO, has already discussed shifting Cherokee production to another facility, allowing the second Toledo line to be retooled for the pickup’s production.
