Starting with the 2017 model year, the sporty coupe formerly known as the Scion FR-S will move into Toyota’s lineup and take on the 86 moniker under which the car is sold in numerous other regions. We already know that the 2017 Toyota 86 has been significantly redesigned, with new LED headlamps and turn signals, a new bumper, and a larger front grille. But how will we really be able to tell the difference between the 2016 Scion FR-S and the 2017 Toyota 86?

The answer lies in the car’s badges. According to Patrick George of Jalopnik, who actually counted the badges when the car was on display at the New York Auto Show, the new Toyota 86 has a whopping eight 86 emblems, leaving you with no doubt as to which car you’re looking at. The emblems are found both on the inside and outside of the car, along with the inevitable Toyota badges on the front and rear, replacing the previous Scion badges.

The Toyota 86 is currently sold in Asia, South Africa, South America, and Australia with its name, while in Europe it’s called the GT86. Until now, it’s been badged and sold as the Scion FR-S here in the US. Toyota also has an agreement with Subaru to sell the 86’s twin, the Subaru BRZ, in markets around the world; this is not likely to change anytime soon.

The 2017 Toyota 86 will go on sale this fall. Until then, you can still buy a 2016 Scion FR-S until the brand shuts down in August.
