In order to replicate their 1965 stunt that involved placing a Ford Mustang on the 86th floor observation deck of the Empire State Building, Ford had to get creative. Not only did it require internal creativity to put all-new 2015 Mustang convertible on arguably the world’s largest (and highest) stage, but it took Ford seeking the help of an old friend to get the job done.

Ford and DST Industries—who originate out of Romulus, Michigan—have been working together for the better part of 60 years, and DST crews were a part of helping to put Ford’s 1965 Mustang on the Empire State Building.

“This week, the band is getting back together as Ford and DST bring the all-new Mustang to the Empire State Building to honor 50 years on sale,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer, in a press release. “We’ve taken the new Mustang to new heights of technology and refinement, so we decided to take it to new heights literally for this celebration.”

Plotting the stunt began in February when Ford Engineers and DST team members gathered together to determine the best course of action. After a measurement of all doors and freight elevators in the Empire State Building, the two-headed monster used a small-scale model of the Mustang to determine just where cuts should be made in order to get the pony car into the building.

The car that ultimately made the trip was stripped entirely in order to ensure its pristine appearance. Ford and DST’s hard work appears to have paid off mighty fine, as the 2015 Mustang convertible in eye-catching Triple Yellow is on display on the observation deck today until 2 a.m. EST. From there, DST and Ford engineers will swoop in and repeat the entire process in reverse in order to have the deck clear for reopening on Friday morning.
