The temperature is going down, so your windows are going up. Now that summer is over and fall is here, you’re probably rolling down your car’s windows less and less, because well, it’s cold outside. That makes perfect sense, but if you haven’t had a chance to give your interior a thorough cleaning, you might be trapping yourself inside your car with an overload of toxins.

In order to keep warm and breathe free with the windows up this fall, follow these cleaning tips from the experts at Healthy Child Healthy World, a nonprofit dedicated to educating families on making more health-conscious choices to protect their children from toxins:
First, take every chance you can to air out your car, and avoid parking where your car is directly exposed to the sun.
“Heat increases the rate at which chemicals are released from the materials,” explains Healthy Child Healthy World.
Break out your HEPA-filter equipped vacuum or utilize the one available at your local DIY car wash and aim it at your car’s flooring and upholstery.
“You’ll suck up chemically laden dust, allergens, and the dirt that’s tracked in on your feet (that could have lead, pesticides, or gasoline mixed in),” according to the Healthy Child Healthy World experts.

Take a damp cloth to your car’s dash and interior components and wipe away all the accumulated grime and dust; water on a microfiber cloth will do the trick—avoid adding more toxins into your interior by using chemical-laded cleaners.
“To reduce the presence of dust even further, run the vents on high for 10 minutes with the windows down to create a safe breathing environment for kids with autism or allergies,” advise the experts at Healthy Child Healthy World.
