For some people, spiders are friends. For others, it can be their worst nightmare. If you fall into the second category, you’re not alone. According to a survey from Insight Pest Solutions, spiders ranked #2 on “the most frightening pest” list (snakes came in at #1).

Whether you’re scared of spiders or simply just want them to stay out of your car, here are some basic DIY steps for keeping these eight-legged creatures as far away from your vehicle as possible.

Keep Your Car Clean

Arachnids like messy places. This is because spiders commonly prey on smaller insects which make their way into your car because they want to eat food particles that can be found in your vehicle’s interior.  Regularly vacuuming your car’s floor and upholstery as well as wiping down plastic surfaces in your car can go a long way in deterring spiders.

Get Rid of Junk

Ok, most people’s cars don’t look as spotless as they did on the first day they drove them home. However, you can definitely limit what items you do keep in your car. Try scheduling a “car date” once a week to rid your car of clutter. Spiders build their webs in damp, dark places and they love to hide in the chaos of any human-made mess (whether that’s in your vehicle or elsewhere). By keeping your car tidy, you are eliminating this “building site” option for spiders.

Use Scent as a Weapon

Spiders don’t like certain smells, including citrus peels as well as tea-tree, eucalyptus, and peppermint oils. Purchase air freshener sprays with this scent to help spider-proof your auto. Another idea is to concoct a vinegar solution; simply mix three parts white vinegar to one part vanilla extract. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and spritz your car. You can also spray the scent on cotton balls, then place the cotton balls in your glove compartment and trunk.
