How many times have you pulled into the gas station – in a rental, a friend or family member’s car, or even your own, and weren’t sure which side the gas cap is on? It’s beyond annoying, because more than likely, you take your best guess and pull up to a pump, only to find you’re wrong. Here, we’ll tell you how to tell which side of the car the gas cap is on, from your comfortable position in the driver’s seat.

We’ll keep this short and sweet: it’s super easy, and once you know the super-secret trick (why don’t they tell you this when you buy your new car?!), you’ll wonder how you never managed to notice it before.

Next time you’re in the car, take a quick gander at the gas icon next to your fuel gauge. See that arrow? That little gem points to the side of the car your fuel cap is on. Yep. It’s that simple. Often the arrow looks more like a small triangle, and if it points to the right side – you guessed it – the fuel cap is on the passenger side of your car.

Unfortunately older cars don’t have the same nifty indicator, and you’ll be left to your own devices.
