Hyundai Expands Lineup with Debut of New Kona Crossover at LA Auto Show
Hyundai Motors has garnered plenty of buzz since it debuted the Kona crossover overseas. This brand-new model is being released in markets across the globe, including here in the USA where it is intended to expand Hyundai’s limited lineup of mostly sedans.
Today at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai took the stage to give American consumers their first up-close look at what the production version of the Kona will offer.

Kona’s Designers Give Us the Skinny on Hyundai’s Newest Vehicle
The press conference began with Hyundai America CEO Brian Smith taking the stage to explain Hyundai’s plan to improve its current lineup by offering eight new or re-engineered vehicles in the next four years, starting with the Kona.
The compact crossover soon made its way onto the stage, following a video introduction that emphasized its target “urban adventurer” demographic. Three versions of the model made their entrance, in bold Lime Twist, Surf Blue, and Thunder Grey body colors (also will be offered in Pulse Red, Sonic Silver, Ultra Black, and Chalk White).
Smith stated that the Kona is made to have a strong personality, embodying three characteristics that buyers want: style, tech, performance. It’s versatile, to go along with whatever you consider “fun.”
Next up was the model’s lead designer, Daniel Kim, who pointed out the car’s active poise and dynamic profile—particularly its armor-clad edges and squinting headlights.
Then, product planning manager Trevor Lai pointed out one of the Kona’s highlights: the choice between the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and the 1.6-liter Turbo engine. Both engines can be given an all-wheel-drive system. It’s tech-forward, too, offering the largest and brightest head-up display in its segment.
If the Hyundai Kona sounds intriguing to you, rest assured that you won’t have to wait long to get your hands on one; it will be available in early 2018.
