Hyundai Helps Son with Cerebral Palsy & His Father Complete First Car Triathlon

“The authentic eco-friendly vehicle is not a show-off, but a challenge to overcome limits.”

That’s the philosophy of Dick Hoyt, who has run 257 triathlons and 72 marathons with his son, Rick. Inspired by showing his son–who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth–that any obstacle can be overcome, Dick has teamed up with Hyundai’s Pure Energy Cars to participate in a unique triathlon.

Using three eco-friendly Hyundai vehicles, Team Hoyt participated in their first triathlon together, side-by-side, in The Hyundai Car Triathlon Powered by Pure Energy.

To prove the commitment of a father to his son, and Hyundai’s commitment to saving the environment, Team Hoyt and Hyundai Pure Energy conquered the first ever car triathlon.

The Hyundai Car Triathlon involved three phases:

  • Swim–Cross a lake with 0% pollutant emissions, done in the Tucson FCEV
  • Cycle–Challenge the power limit of two engines, done in the Sonata Hybrid
  • Run–Finish the marathon course on one electric-only charge, done in the Sonata Plug-In

Throughout the endeavor, Dick talks about the importance of working together, valuing your family, and finding motivation to overcome anything.

Scott Noh, Head of Overseas Marketing Group at Hyundai Motor, said, “The history of Hyundai Motor’s environmental focus has always been about making better eco-friendly cars, regardless of the challenges, an ambition that draws parallels with the Hoyt family’s battle against prejudices towards people with disabilities.”

Regardless that this was meant to advertise cars, the bond between father and son are what make this commercial more than just about a product.
