Beijing Motor Show ix25 Concept

Back in November 2014, Hyundai unveiled a ready-for-production B-segment CUV called the iX25 at the Guangzhou Auto Show. Based on a concept launched a year ago at the Beijing Auto Show, this compact SUV was strategically developed for China and similar Asian markets.

After heavy testing in the Indian markets, Hyundai is preparing to release the iX25 in India and around the globe–but under a different name. The moniker of the Korean automaker’s new compact SUV which will be launched around the globe will be…the Hyundai Creta.

iX25 Will Officially Be Called the Hyundai Creta

Other than in China, where the iX25 is already being sold and called by its original name, the SUV based on the iX25 platform will be called the Creta.

No, not the Cretin–although the word certainly sounds similar. Hyundai explained that the “Creta” name is meant to stir similarities to the term “creative,” as the new model is “simple, creative, [and] caring.” It’s also noted the name is derived from the Island of Crete.

It is intended to compete against the Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, and Mahindra Scorpio. Many are speculating the Creta will receive a 1.4-liter gasoline engine, 1.6-liter gasoline, 2.0-liter gasoline, 1.4-liter diesel, or 1.6-liter diesel. Basically, no one’s sure what.

The Hyundai Creta is first destined for India, where it will debut in the second half of this year, followed by a global roll-out in other world markets. We anticipate seeing the finished Creta model revealed later this month.
