Despite receiving criticism for its limited lineup, Hyundai has been making strides to increase model diversity and appeal to a wider range of demographics–especially those who prefer SUVs/crossovers. So far, the improvements are showing.

July 2015 was a good month for the automaker, as total units sold (71,013) increased 6% over last year’s record-making July results.

Sonata, Elantra, and Santa Fe Top Hyundai Sales in July

King of the hill was the Sonata, Hyundai’s beloved mid-size sedan, which is celebrating its 30 year anniversary. In fact, last month the Sonata experienced its best July sales results ever, gaining 12% and totaling 23,917 units with new owners. Following closely was the popular compact sedan, the Elantra, with 22,135 units sold.

The most exciting results, however, are the increased movement of Santa Fes off dealership lots–and the Tucson did pretty well too.

“With the increased availability of Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport we experienced the strongest sales month ever with those models up a whopping 35 percent combined,” said Bob Pradzinski, vice president of national sales for Hyundai Motor America. “The Tucson, our compact CUV, saw sales gains of 4 percent and with the all-new Tucson just arriving at dealerships we anticipate further growth in the months ahead.”

The only models to lose ground in July 2015 compared to July 2014 were the Veloster, Azera, Genesis, and Equus. Clearly, Hyundai’s less-popular models are steadily losing traction while crossovers and SUVs continue to gain popularity in the industry. After seeing increases in sales for the Tucson and Santa Fe, it’s no wonder the Korean automaker is changing its direction to include new models like the Santa Cruz.
