Hyundai-Kia Tech Center Tests Wireless EV Charging
Charging stations might soon be a thing of the past. Hyundai and Kia are currently working together with Mojo Mobility, a wireless power company, to create a wireless electric vehicle charger. Similar to power pads used to charge phones, this wireless technology, which is known as inductive charging, will only ask that you know how to park. It’s that simple.
So far, two phases of testing have been completed at the Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center. The first face allowed the partnership to develop a wireless power transfer system that has more than 85% grid-to-vehicle efficiency—which means 85% of the power produced actually charged the car.
The second phase enhanced charging efficiency, using Kia’s new Soul EV to create a complex charging system that works just as well as using a charge port. For the next phase, which the partnership is currently working on, this inductive charging system will be tested for durability, interoperability, safety, and performance.
With this type of technology on the horizon, electric cars will have an even stronger presence in the industry’s future. Let’s just hope you know how to park so that your EV receives a full charge!
