With the 2015 World Rally Championship (WRC) series getting underway in Monte Carlo at the end of January, participating teams are beginning to reveal their automotive arsenal.

After having been in the prototype and testing stages since June, Hyundai’s official WRC challenger has been unveiled.

The specification was based off its i20 hatchback platform–a smart choice by the brand, considering the i20 WRC racer we’re seeing is quite stylish.

After only returning to premier rally racing last year, Hyundai is already showing its potential through its i20 WRC racer. The additions made to the basic i20 hatchback–from the raised rear spoiler to the protruding tire shields–perfectly suit the World Rally competitor.

According to team principal, Michel Nandan, while the vehicle resembles the i20, the hardware underneath is vastly different. He also pointed out the overwhelming support that Hyundai’s affiliate brands have given to the WRC participation.

“We have had a lot of support from Hyundai around the world following our inaugural season and it is a pleasure to welcome Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai WIA, and Hyundai Steel to the team for 2015,” Nandan said. “The appeal and business benefits of our WRC activities in 2014 became quickly apparent to Hyundai globally and these new partnerships are a result of that.”

Hopefully the customized i20 will race as nicely as it looks. With Thierry Neuville, Dani Sordo, and Hayden Paddon driving this year, that shouldn’t be a problem.
