Illinois Engineering Student Wins Internship With Infiniti

When you’re in college, finding the perfect internship does a lot to help you find a job after school. Alex Allmandinger just hit the jackpot, then, as he is the sole American in the group of five global winners of the 2015 Infiniti Performance Engineering Academy (IPEA).

 

Allmandinger is an engineering student at the University of Illinois, and he beat thousands of other students who applied for the opportunity. After an initial round of interviews and testing, 10 finalists were selected in each region. Those finalists were then invited to an event where they were given more interviews and tests by Infiniti and Infiniti Red Bull Racing to see who would come out on top.

The prize is certainly worth all of the work. Starting in September, Allmandinger starts his year-long placement with eight months working alongside the Infiniti Red Bull Racing Team, four-time Formula One World Champions. He will be with them at Infiniti’s Milton Keynes, England racing headquarters, and then move to Infiniti’s European Technical Center in Cranfield to work on road cars for the remaining four months.

According to Tommaso Volpe, global director of Infiniti Formula One, “”If last year’s winners are anything to go by, it will not be long before all of them are making a significant contribution both to us and to the race team. With F1 becoming more and more relevant to the automotive industry – and an increased focus of the placements this year being on the road car development – we are training a new generation of engineers who will play a key role in the crossover between the two industries.”
