Infiniti, in order to achieve their goal of becoming a global brand, is looking to expand their lineup by 60 percent and double the amount of available powertrains over the next few years. While the usual suspects are expected to be a part of the plan—particularly the UK-made Q30 hatchback and QX30 crossover and, hopefully, a production version of the Q50 Eau Rouge—this also reopens the possibility of getting the long-gestured Infiniti LE electric sedan.

For those who might not remember, the Infiniti LE Concept debuted back at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, promising the body and performance of a G Sedan and the efficiency of a LEAF. Said to utilize an innovative Wireless Charging System, the LE was said to “[become] reality in 2014.” Here it is, halfway through 2014, and our minds are as-yet unblown.

Automotive News says that, despite the departure of Johan de Nysschen, the Infiniti LE is still a go.

According to their projections:

Now being eyed for 2017-18, the EV will share an architectural platform with the Nissan Leaf but have a unique body design and luxury interior. It also will come with a next-generation battery range beyond the current standard of approximately 90 miles.

While Infiniti plans to fill as many of the holes in their lineup as they can between 2015 and 2018, the renewed focus on electric vehicles by luxury automakers, spurred on in many ways by the increasing popularity of Tesla, makes the Infiniti LE an essential addition moving forward. Whether we get it sooner rather than later, however, remains to be seen.
