Anyone on Instagram knows—Layout is the perfect way to make an Instagram selfie a masterpiece. The Layout editing tool allows any user to take an image and flip it or duplicate it to make the image stand out and seem a bit more “artistic.” But what about using the Layout editing tool to do more than fix up your selfies?

Well, one Instagram user is using this popular editing tool to create some whimsical pictures of cars that will make you smile.

José Quintela, a Portuguese photographer, takes pictures of cars around the city of Lisbon, then flips half of the image and aligns it along a tire. This simple act transforms an everyday car into a single-wheeled vehicle from the future. The photos from his Instagram page are absolutely enthralling.

“I liked the fact that I still had a wheel, but with a kind of futuristic looking car around it,” said Quintela. “Then I realized that every front or back of a car could make a surprisingly new one. After that, I couldn’t stop.”

When Quintela isn’t creating his futuristic unicycles—Unicars? Unimobiles?—he works as a copywriter for an ad agency. On the weekends, he goes out to photograph cars he sees out on the streets. The first image for this project was taken in January, and the project has grown to include about 100 images since its conception. While a lot of these images don’t end up being posted to Instagram, Quintela finds it truly exciting when his method creates unusual backdrops.
