Instead Of Helping Crash Victims, Ohio Man Uses Cellphone To Film Scene

In a scene that sounds like it came straight from Jake Gyllenhaal’s movie Nightcrawlers, a man from Lorain, Ohio filmed the aftermath of a car crash that claimed the life of a teenage boy, while others tried to pull the kids from the burning vehicle.

Paul Pelton, 41, uploaded the six-minute video and tried to get news stations to donate money to his charity in exchange for the footage. In the video, Pelton can be seen opening the door to the vehicle to film the two bloody teenagers up closer. That was the move that ended up costing him.

As a result of opening the door and entering the vehicle without permission, Pelton was charged with vehicular trespassing and could face up to 30 days in jail and be forced to pay a $250 fine if convicted.

“We searched to try to find anything to charge him with,” said Detective Buddy Stewart after pointing out that while it’s in very bad taste, it’s technically not illegal to record video at a crime scene or even try to sell the gory footage over Facebook either.

Police reports indicate the teenage driver lost control of the car and then slammed into another automobile, a house, and then a tree. The driver survived, but his 17-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“I didn’t do that to have some type of gore video,” said Pelton, who reportedly can be heard calling the boys “idiots” in the video. “I just wanted to educate people to slow down.”

Here’s a news video documenting this story. The gory parts have already been edited out:
