It’s one thing to say that you support the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, and it’s another thing entirely to pay out of pocket to help restore a vet’s 1965 Ford Mustang to cherry condition.

That’s exactly what Margaret and Timor Martin of Pearland, Texas did when they stopped in to get their classic car repaired at an area shop called Gear Jammin’ Classics. They heard about the story of retired Staff Sergeant Kelly Foster, who purchased a 1965 Ford Mustang after returning from his tour in Iraq in 2005.

Foster had been saving money to gradually restore the Mustang to showroom condition. The Martins, however, were so moved by his story that they pulled together funds from their friends and family and paid the $20,000 necessary to have the Mustang completely restored.

“We feel like these guys are underpaid and under-appreciated,” Margaret Martin told KHOU 11. “They are not taken care of the way someone who is willing to put their life on their line should be treated.”

A visibly touched Foster told KHOU 11, “I’m extremely surprised. I had no idea this was going to happen. I’m speechless.”
