No one can deny that Michael Waltrip is a NASCAR legend. He’s raced in over 780 races in 31 years, and is now a part-time driver when he’s not on Fox Sports as an analyst. You also can’t forget that he’s been on Dancing with the Stars, the true mark of celebrity.

While he’s racing part-time, he’s a full-time owner of a NASCAR race team named after himself. Since Toyota entered the NASCAR field in 2007, Michael Waltrip Racing has used their stock cars to chase after the Sprint Cup.

However, rumors started to swirl this weekend in Indianapolis that the team may be making the switch to Team Chevy.

Neither group would comment on the rumors at the Brickyard 400, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the race team switched to a more American brand.

David Wilson, president and general manager of TRD USA, the racing arm of Toyota, has said recently, “As a whole as a manufacturer, I’ve said since this new Chase format was announced—which we love, which we think is a great, fun, engaging way to enter the playoffs, if you will—I’ve said as one of three manufacturers that, statistically, we need to load that funnel at Chicago arguably with five, six, seven Toyotas.”

Michael Waltrip Racing currently has racers Clint Bowyer, Brian Vickers, and David Ragan in their lineup. Of the three drivers, Bowyer is the closest to the Sprint Cup Series leader board in 15th place.

If the team moves to Chevrolet, it would be interesting to see if Toyota presents it as a move in line with the brand’s desire to be more visible in the Chase with better drivers, or if Michael Waltrip’s team will present it as a move to a better stock car.
