Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth has begun serving his five-day jail sentence for reckless driving. The all-star was caught driving his Porsche 105 mph in a 55 mph zone in Fairfax County, Virginia back in July; was convicted last month after pleading guilty; and was initially sentenced to 10 days in jail, before an appeal dropped it down to five.

Werth turned himself in last night, Friday, January 30th, to begin doing hard time. He’ll be serving his sentence over the course of a couple weekends, so as not to interfere with the physical therapy schedule he’s on following shoulder surgery.

His driver’s license has also been suspended for six months, and he will have to pay $200 in fines.

Although Werth’s doubling of the speed limit was definitely irresponsible, only in a state with driving laws as strict as Virginia’s would a first-time offender get jail time for a traffic violation. But you know what they say: if you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime… in Virginia.
