Jeep is one of the most popular brands for Instagram users

Buying a new car—or at least a new car for you—is a great feeling. It’s understandable to be proud of your newest adult purchase, which is why it’s common to see posts featuring people’s new cars on social media. In fact, there are so many of these posts on Instagram, that AutoNation decided to do a study on it.

In its recent study, AutoNation searched for the #NewCar hashtag on Instagram. The company then sorted through 100,000 Instagram images based on the vehicles’ makes and got a regional snapshot of the new cars by using the geotagged locations. After doing this research, AutoNation figured out that the Jeep brand is one of the most popular brands in the nation.

While the number of posts with the #NewCar hashtag featuring a Jeep was slightly less than those featuring BMW models and Mercedes-Benz, the rugged American carmaker was actually considered the most popular brand in the United States. This came to light when the study was filtered by state. Even though BMW was considered the brand with the most #NewCar posts on Instagram, it only had five states to its name, whereas Jeep came in with an impressive 17 states.

It really comes as no surprise, since Jeep is beloved in the more rugged states, such as Texas, Oregon, and South Dakota. Curiously enough, though, people in New Jersey—which isn’t exactly known for being a rugged area—also gravitated towards the brand. It also came out on top in Ohio, which shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, since Toledo is the only factory in the world that builds the iconic Jeep Wrangler.

Along with discovering that Jeep is considered the most popular car brand—at least on Instagram—the study also found that the top five states to post about their #NewCars on Instagram were also pretty unexpected. The five states were Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, Delaware, and Montana. With the majority of these states being rather rural, it appears the belief that people living in rural areas don’t like boasting about their new rides is completely wrong.
