When we heard the news that Jeep is bringing back the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, we couldn’t help but be exciting. The Grand Wagoneer, which ended production back in 1991, is an iconic Jeep that represents an era of vehicles where wood paneling was a thing.

Since the announcement of the return of these Jeep models, though, we’ve heard very little—until now. According to Mike Manley, head of the Jeep and Ram truck brands, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are going to be super posh.

Both of these Jeep models are set to arrive at dealerships in 2019. Each of the nameplates will be a luxury vehicle, with the Grand Wagoneer being more luxurious than the Wagoneer (hence the Grand). Despite the difference in luxury, though, the two models will share a platform with the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee.

“The Wagoneer name represents, historically, the pinnacle of premium for the Jeep world,” said Manley in an interview with Automotive News. “But in the same way as you might have an Overland and a Summit, you have different trim levels. So you could imagine the use of a Wagoneer to denote a really premium vehicle, and a Grand Wagoneer takes it to the very next level. If you were to use that as your naming strategy, that’s exactly how I would use the trims.”

It’s already been established that the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will be built at Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s Warren Truck Assembly complex near Detroit. Their production will replace that of the Ram 1500 pickup truck, which will move to Sterling Heights Assembly for the 2018 model year.
