Usually, becoming unexpectedly unemployed is a cause for more drinking, not less. But not so for fired Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson, who recently revealed in his Sunday Times column that he gave up alcohol two weeks ago… and is saving about $800 a week as a result.

“Because I’m not spending 40 quid a day on wine and another 40 on taxis to run me around, I’m saving more than £500 [$769 USD] a week,” Clarkson, 55, wrote in his column.

But just because Clarkson is saving cash, doesn’t mean that he’s pocketing any of it.

“Because I’m now driving everywhere I’m spending more than that, and a lot more besides, on parking tickets,” Clarkson continued.

Clarkson, who has a famous penchant for rose wine (and had been indulging in the stuff when he punched a BBC producer), said that he isn’t planning to give drinking up for good. He attributed his trial separation from booze to a documentary he recently watched about Amy Winehouse, and the death of former Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy.

“He was an affable soul who liked what I’m sure he would have called a tincture,” Clarkson wrote about Kennedy, “and a family statement says the post-mortem showed his death ‘was a consequence of his battle with alcoholism.’”

Clarkson also hinted (again) that he may be going Hollywood soon, adding that, “Californians have a habit of ringing at 11 pm, and I realised I couldn’t think as straight as they do with their leaves and mineral water existence if I was halfway through my third bottle of Leoube.”

Perhaps Clarkson wants to keep a clear head as he negotiates the details of that rumored Netflix series, House of Cars, which would bring him back to the small screen. Here’s hoping…
