General Motors India has announced that its current chief operating officer, Kaher Kazem, will also serve in the role of president and managing director effective the first of the year.

Kazem’s appointment to the role comes in the wake of current GM India president and managing director Arvind Saxena, who has elected to retire effective January 1st, 2016. Saxena took the reins for GM India in early 2014 and has helped create significant growth in the region.

“I want to thank Arvind, who has helped lay the foundation for the future success of GM India,” said GM Executive Vice President and GM International President Stefan Jacoby. “We look forward to a smooth transition to ensure the continued execution of our business transformation.”

Kazem has been with General Motors since 1995, when he joined GM Holden in Australia as a senior engineer. Kazem would rise to leadership roles within GM Holden Manufacturing Operations before being appointed VP of Manufacturing and Quality for GM Thailand/ASEAN in 2009. Kazem also served as GM Uzbekistan’s president and managing director from 2012 until being named COO of GM India in early 2015.

“With Kaher’s hands-on experience and direct knowledge of the business, we are pleased to appoint him to lead GM India at this important time,” said Jacoby. “GM is committed to India for the long term. Kaher’s proven track record will enable us to deliver to Indian consumers the great vehicles they want and the world-class customer experience they deserve.”
