The 2014 Rally America National Championship season began in fine form for Ken Block, who drove his (and co-driver Alex Gelsomino’s) Ford Fiesta to a victory at the season-opening 100 Acre Wood Rally on Saturday night. A 100 Acre Wood Rally victory is not unfamiliar territory for Block: he has won seven out of the last eight years.

The Ford Fiesta, driven by Block, came out of the first stage with a 20.6 second lead over Subaru Rally Team USA and driver, David Higgins. When catastrophic engine failure plagued Higgins and Subaru in Stage 9, Block’s victory was all but guaranteed.

“I felt as if I had very few mistakes this weekend,” said Block in a statement through Ford. “Unfortunately, my top competition fell out on day two and I was able to extend my lead. It took some pressure off, which I don’t like, because I like to push hard.  Instead, I was able to just enjoy these roads and put on a good show for the fans.”

The Ford Fiesta enjoyed another bit of good fortune at this year’s 100 Acre Wood Rally when Andrew Comrie-Picard and Ole Holter won the Two-Wheel Drive category in their Team O’Neil Fiesta. The duo defeated 2WD points leader, Matthew Johnson (with Jeremy Wimpey), of Scion Racing.

“This event was really confidence inspiring,” said Comrie-Picard. “This event really favors high horsepower for faster speeds, but we were exact with the Ford Fiesta and we did what we came here to do.”

Both Ford Fiesta teams will have some time to reflect on their 100 Acre Wood Rally victories before they get back to action May 2-4 at the Oregon Trail Rally in Portland, Oregon.
