Keselowski Wins First Chase for the Sprint Cup Race

The inaugural Chase for the Sprint Cup got underway Sunday night at Chicagoland Speedway, and it was Brad Keselowski making a three-wide pass of Kyle Larson and Kevin Harvick to take the checkered flag and automatically advance into the second round of the 10-race Chase playoff system.

Keselowski’s win—his second consecutive and fifth overall this season—took a great deal of patience considering his middle-of-the-pack starting position. It was also Ford Racing’s first win ever at Chicagoland Speedway.

“You have to be so patient,” Keselowski said after the win. “The cars in traffic are all over the track and it is very easy to spin out on your own and you have to pace yourself. I don’t know what to say. I am so thankful to be here. I want to say thanks because I know the fans can hear me. I saw all of them standing on their feet when we made the pass for the lead and that was awesome.”

With 19 laps to go in the race and following a restart, Larson and Harvick were racing neck-and-neck in the high and low track positions when Keselowski took it up the middle to grab the lead.

“I guess you couldn’t ask for a better way to start the Chase other than starting up front.  Just phenomenal with the way things played out,” Keselowski added. “We just put it all together, and that was very, very special.”

The next race in the Challenger Round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup will be the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, which will be live on ESPN on Sunday, September 21 at 2:00pm ET.
