Kia Announces Nic Jönsson and Mark Wilkins as Drivers for 2014 PWC
Kia has announced the driver line-up for their third season in the Pirelli World Challenge (PWC), tapping Nic Jönsson and Mark Wilkins to man Kia Racing’s Grand Touring Sport (GTS) Class No. 36 and No.38 Turbocharged Optimas.
Nic Jönsson was responsible for Kia Racing’s first ever win back in 2011 in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. He will drive the No. 36 DonorsChoose.org Optima turbo. Mark Wilkins returns to the familiar confines of his No.38 B.R.A.K.E.S. Optima again in 2014 after claiming six podiums and two victories (at Detroit and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course) during last year’s campaign.
“The Kia Racing team has exceeded our expectations in the Pirelli World Challenge after two solid seasons of intense competition, posting four wins and 12 podiums in that time,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of sales and marketing, KMA, in a statement. “We had a promising run last year and came close to winning the championship in the season finale. Nic, Mark and the entire Kia Racing team are outstanding brand ambassadors, helping us to demonstrate the quality, reliability and performance of our U.S.-built Optimas. We’re very glad to have both drivers back with us again and anxious to build on our strong results and have another shot at the title in 2014.”
The 2014 Pirelli World Challenge begins March 29-30 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Live coverage will be available online at www.world-challengetv.com, and Kia Racing’s Facebook and Twitter will bring race fans all of the latest updates as they happen.
