The Korean automaker will begin selling vehicles in Mexico this summer

South Korea’s Kia Motors will soon have a presence south of the border, once the automaker begins selling cars in Mexico this July. Kia will be entering the Mexican auto market in advance of its first manufacturing plant in the country, which should begin production in the first half of 2016.

Kia plans to bring the Korean-born Forte compact, the US-made Sorento SUV, and the European-manufactured Sportage SUV to the United Mexican States, Latin America’s second-largest car market.  Kia’s parent company, Hyundai, has been selling the Sonata, Elantra, Tucson and i10 in Mexico since last year.

The Mexican auto market is anticipated by IHS Automotive to grow 3% from 2014 to 1.16 million vehicles this year, and to continue increasing steadily up until the year 2020.

Reuters reports that Kia’s Mexican plant will begin by producing the Forte and Rio subcompact, which should help meet the demand of the US market, where the automaker’s sole American factory is currently running at full capacity. Hopefully, Kia won’t be victimized by Montezuma’s Revenge in the same way that Honda has been.
