Kia Makes Three Big, Green Announcements
Kia is taking going green to a whole new level. While the Korean carmaker is already known for its outstanding vehicles, raking in the awards left and right like the International Car of the Year awards, it is now focusing its efforts on offering better and more eco-friendly options to consumers.
Earlier this week, Kia announced a variety of upgrades for the Kia Optima, which includes a brand-new plug-in hybrid version and updates to the existing Hybrid model. The Optima PHEV will be the company’s first, and will come equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder GDI engine. This engine will put out 154 horsepower and 189 lb-ft of torque, and will be paired with a 50-kW electric motor.
As for the Optima Hybrid updates, these will include a change in power. The hybrid vehicle will have a 2.0-liter GDI engine instead of the old 2.4-liter. Kia will pair the new engine with a 38-kW electric motor and an updated six-speed automatic transmission.
But that’s not all—Kia has also announced that it’s going to give the Toyota Mirai fuel-cell vehicle a run for its money.
The Korean carmaker will debut its own FCV in 2020, joining the other hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and all-electric vehicles from the brand. This new green car addition will expand Kia’s eco-friendly car lineup from four to 11 models over the next five years.
