Kia is taking its eco-friendly practices to its manufacturing plant, reducing the amount of pollutants it emitts

Kia’s commitment to offering eco-friendly vehicle options is turning into a big commitment in cutting its car production emissions. Over the last year, the South Korean carmaker has continually worked towards practicing the most environmentally sustainable production methods possible—and it’s paying off.

According to the brand’s annual MOVE sustainability report, the brand has already reduced its amount of greenhouse gas emissions levels, while also decreasing waste and reducing water use across its domestic production sites. In fact, the number of air pollutants produced per vehicle made has already decreased 5% from last year.

This improved eco-friendliness was achieved in a variety of ways. This includes a focus on recycling, enforcing a variety of employee sustainability initiatives, reducing the amount of unit waste, and adopting cleaner, and more modern production methods. An example is the fact that Kia now recycles 93.7% of waste materials.

In 2015, the Kia plants in Sohari, Gwangju, and Hwasung, Korea—the brand’s domestic plants—accounted for 56.5% of Kia’s global production. This means that the focus on sustainability within Kia’s domestic plants is sure to influence the rest of the brand’s production methods, therefore reducing the amount of pollutants that enter the atmosphere.

Kia plans on reducing its greenhouse gas emissions from the production of each vehicle in the future. The brand hopes to cut its emission levels by 30% compared to levels from 2008 and it’s well on its way to doing just that.
