Kia wrapped up the first quarter of 2017 with sales totaling 49,429 vehicles in the United States, down 15% from the 58,279 vehicles delivered by the brand in March 2016 on its way to a record-breaking year. Every vehicle in the Kia lineup sustained a year-over-year loss during the month but for the all-new Niro hybrid crossover, which posted strong sales in its second full month on the market.

Kia’s 2016 Sales Results: Sets new full-year record in United States thanks to Forte, Optima

Sales of the Niro totaled 2,704 units in March, bringing total sales since launch to 4,889 units. The sharp-looking, Guinness World Record®-holding crossover provides Kia with the one-two punch of having a hot new offering in the industry’s most popular segment that also just so happens to be one of the more efficient vehicles on the road. The Kia Niro FE offers EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 52 mpg city/49 mpg highway/50 mpg combined.

Though it posted a 1.1% year-over-year decline, sales of the Kia Forte were relatively strong, leading the brand volume-wise with 10,289 units delivered. The Forte is the lone vehicle in Kia’s lineup to post a positive first-quarter result, growing 2016’s Q1 total of 23,922 units delivered by 4.8% to 25,062 units. The 2017 Kia Forte has proven popular with compact sedan shoppers due in no smart part to its improved base-level 2.0-liter Atkinson I-4 engine and the addition of a new S trim level.

With the first quarter of 2017 in the books, Kia’s sales total 127,728 units, down 12.7% from the 146,321 vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2016. Despite a 9.5% decline, the Kia Optima leads the brand in terms of volume with 26,945 units delivered.
