In many families, sibling rivalry runs rampant. The eldest children set precedent for the siblings to follow, while those younger siblings consistently strive to outdo their older siblings. Hyundai and Kia have shown us that this dynamic can bleed into the world of automotive. And sometimes, the underdogs come out on top.

For the first time in its history, Kia has outsold Hyundai, its corporate older sibling, right in their home base of South Korea.

Kia is South Korea’s second-largest automobile manufacturer, trailing directly behind Hyundai Motor Company, which became Kia’s parent company in 1998. Since then, Hyundai and Kia have maintained their sibling rivalry. In the past, Hyundai has always come out ahead, but 2016 was a game-changer for its younger sibling.

In 2016, Kia outsold Hyundai with 475,107 passenger cars sold, compared to Hyundai’s 418,303.

But Kia isn’t stopping yet. This victory has continued throughout 2017; Kia has sold over 3,000 more vehicles than Hyundai so far this year. Kia’s consumer attraction is being attributed to the brand’s affordability and European style. However, despite its current winning streak, the overall market for the motor companies is decreasing. A spokesman for Hyundai went on record to say, “What’s more alarming for us is the declining market share of both Hyundai and Kia in the local market.”

In the next few months, Hyundai has plans to release a new compact SUV, the Kona, in hopes of reinvigorating the marketplace.
