The new Sportage helped Kia post record-breaking sales in May

April showers brought more than just flowers in the month of May for Kia Motors America. The South Korean carmaker had a record-breaking month of sales last month. With a total sales of 62,926 units, Kia managed to post its fourth monthly sales record in the first five months of 2016.

“Our popular ‘Summer’s On Us’ sales event generated significant showroom traffic, and we reached new heights in May despite two fewer selling days this year and an overall slowing of sales seen throughout the industry,” said Michael Sprague, chief operating office and EVP for Kia Motors America. “With the all-new Sportage attracting more customers than ever before, and the return of our music-loving hamsters in a new campaign for the Soul, we are confident customers will continue to discover all that the ‘New Kia’ has to offer.”

Not only did Kia have a record sales in the month of May, but the Kia Sportage also posted its highest single month sales total in the company’s history. The popular crossover posted a total of 8,568 sales, which is almost double the 4,487 units sold in May of 2015. Along with the Sportage, the Sorento also so a double digit sales increase with 11,914 sales in May 2016, an increase of over 10% compared to last year’s May sales.

Each of these crossover SUVs has been raking in the awards, too, which is why it comes as no surprise that they are doing so well in the sales department. The 2017 Sportage has already won two accolades after only being on the market for a few months, after being named an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and receiving the Red Dot Award for Product Design. As for the 2016 Sorento, these awards include an IIHS Top Safety Pick and a 5-star overall crash safety rating from the NHTSA.
