Kia is celebrating 25 years in the United Kingdom with a report that predicts the future of the automotive industry

It has been 25 years since the Kia brand launched in the United Kingdom, and the Korean carmaker wants to celebrate this milestone right. So what did it do? Well, Kia released a report to predict the future of the automotive industry in 25 years—and it has some interesting predictions.

Kia believes that over half of all new cars sold in 25 years will be fully autonomous. Furthermore, the carmaker also believes that motorways in the future will be built with specific lanes for these autonomous vehicles. These traffic lanes will allow vehicles to communicate with the road, allowing them to detect obstacles and potholes while they drive.

Dr. Frank Shaw, who helped Kia with this predictive report, states, “The future of the car industry is an exciting one, as there will be a transformation from an industry built by mechanics to one that is largely driven by software developers. There is considerable speculation in 2016 about autonomous driving, the full impacts of which will not become manifest until the 2040s. I am confident however that over the next 25 years, the industry and technology companies will deliver a safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly driving experience for everyone.”

The true impact of self-driving vehicles is still unknown, but many are speculating that the increase of autonomous vehicles out on public roads could decrease the number of parking tickets given and the high cost of insurance premiums. There is also talk of the world seeing a steep increase in car sharing, rather than owning individual vehicles.

Whether Kia’s prediction comes to fruition or not, the brand’s report is definitely worth thinking about.
