Kia’s May sales were the company’s best ever in the U.S., largely because of the 2015 Optima.

This year marks the 20th anniversary for Kia Motors’ presence in the United States, and as a perfect present for the Korean automaker, Kia’s May sales marked the first time that the company topped 60,000 units sold in a month in its 20 year history. In total, Kia moved 60,087 units last month. This marks a 14.8 percent increase over May 2013 sales.

According to Kia, increased demand for the Optima sedan was largely responsible for the brand’s incredible sales growth. In fact, the Optima set an all-time single-month sales record for Kia, with 16,843 units sold. The Kia Soul also had a record-breaking month, selling 15,606 units. “As part of our long-term strategy, Kia launched seven all-new or significantly redesigned vehicles in 2013, including the redesigned Optima and totally transformed Soul, which laid the foundation for the record-breaking success we’ve enjoyed so far this year, including our best-ever monthly performance in May,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of sales and marketing, KMA.  “We continue to attract more consumers to our showrooms with a comprehensive lineup that spans from subcompact to luxury and delivers the world-class design, advanced technology and outstanding quality Kia has become known for.” Kia’s sister company, Hyundai Motors America, also experienced its best month of sales in May.
