Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s (FCA) vice president of interior design, Klaus Busse, recently sat down with Fortune to discuss, among many other things (like what’s on his nightstand, you know, the hard-hitting questions), the all-new 2015 Jeep Renegade interior.

Busse reported, “My team has amazing ideas when it comes to materials and colors. For the Renegade, Jeep’s first small SUV, we looked at ‘renegade’ or sports-like base jumping, parkour running, or sand surfing to create a unique color palette for this vehicle.” That palette includes a brown/light gray cabin with tiny bursts of anodized orange accents.

Another design inspiration that Renegade drivers might enjoy is the red paint ball splash blot that was implemented on the instrument panel to mark the high-rev-point signal, in place of a dot. But it’s not just the Jeep Renegade interior that has benefited from such strange inspiration. The center armrest release handle in the Grand Cherokee was apparently inspired by a rock that Busse found on a beach on Lake Michigan. That design is now used in Jeep interiors across the lineup. “We get away with a lot of crazy things,” remarked Busse.

Busse also spoke about his sense of fashion (which he admittedly gets from his wife), about how he encourages his whole team to travel the world for inspiration, and even about his favorite foods (Moqueca and Bulgogi, both of which he discovered while traveling).

Another look at the interior

Perhaps most interesting was Busse’s design philosophy, in terms of the automotive industry: “So many times people say that the auto industry is slow and behind. But we have to create for the long term—it’s not a throwaway item. You have to think what people will want not just now but years from now.”
