2014, 2015 Lancer Named IIHS Top Safety PickThe 2015 Lancer might not be far off from appearing in showrooms across the country, but the 2014 model has not finished racking up achievements quite yet. Mitsubishi announced that the 2014 Lancer, including the Ralliart and EVO models, has earned the distinction of “Top Safety Pick” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

“It is great to see our very popular Mitsubishi Lancer once again named as a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety,” said Don Swearingen, Executive Vice President of MMNA. “Lancer is a versatile compact sports sedan that has an exceptional degree of safety, excellent fuel economy, sporty performance and plentiful standard features all at price to fit almost any budget.”

In order to be named a “Top Safety Pick,” the Lancer had to demonstrate its crashworthiness in the following tests: small overlap front; moderate overlap front; side; roof strength; and head restraints and seats.

The 2014 Lancer earned scores of “Good” in the latter four while earning a rating of “Acceptable” in the small overlap front crash test.

The small overlap front crash test has been the bane of many small cars’ existence and is notoriously difficult to pass. Half of the 12 small cars evaluated by the IIHS failed with scores of “marginal” or “poor.”

The “Top Safety Pick” title is also applicable to the 2015 Lancer, which is expected to hit showrooms starting this month.
