GM Sustainability Report 2016

On Tuesday, General Motors released its latest Sustainability Report, which emphasized the importance of connectivity, car-sharing, autonomous vehicles, and alternative propulsion as keys to the future of providing customers with cleaner, safer, and more efficient mobility options.

“We see tremendous potential in these technologies and the long-term benefits for our customers and communities around the world,” said GM CEO Mary Barra. “The GM team is looking to lead this transformation of personal mobility and will continue to deliver on our commitment to responsible manufacturing.”

GM’s progress was also praised by Ceres, an independent third-party nonprofit which advocates for sustainability leadership.

“GM is quickly and appropriately adapting its business to our rapidly changing world, from addressing climate change through public policy advocacy to helping move electric vehicles into the mainstream,” said Ceres president Mindy Lubber.

Sustainable Mobility: Why you should consider carpooling

The new Sustainability Report outlines GM’s various strategic technology investments, ranging from autonomous tech to manufacturing improvements.

In its efforts to pave the way for autonomous vehicles, GM is using its 20 years of OnStar connectivity expertise to develop advanced safety technologies and car-sharing. The automaker is working to create the largest vehicle-to-infrastructure enabled corridor in the United States on 120 miles of Metro Detroit freeways, and will also bring SuperCruise semi-autonomous driver-assist to the Cadillac CT6 next year.

As part of its focus on urban mobility, GM invested $500 million in Lyft and created its own car-sharing brand, Maven.

In terms of fuel efficiency, GM continues to add greener models to its lineup, this year improving from six to nine models that offer an EPA-estimated 40 mpg or better on the highway. Similarly, GM has renewed its commitment to carbon reduction, with GM signing the White House American Business Act on Climate Pledge and aggressively pursuing new ways to use more renewable energy.

Finally, GM remains on track to meet all of its 2020 global manufacturing commitments, which include reduction of waste and water, energy, and carbon intensity.

“Our 215,000 workers worldwide, seeking to serve our communities and build relationships both inside and outside of GM, are helping us minimize our environmental footprint while increasing our positive societal impact,” said Jim DeLuca, General Motors’ executive vice president of global manufacturing.
