Lawnmower Sharing? GM’s Maven Considers Expanding Services
Members of General Motors’ Maven service can rent vehicles and participate in peer-to-peer car sharing. Soon, they might be able to rent and share lawnmowers, boats, and RVs, too.
Julia Steyn, the vice president of GM Urban Mobility and Maven, tells Automotive News that the service is looking at these and other options for expansion.
For people in large urban areas, using Maven’s services is already a great way to gain use of a vehicle without the drawbacks of ownership. It’s also an effective way to make money from a vehicle that would otherwise be sitting unused and taking up space.
Considering a Major Purchase? Estimate your credit score before applying for a loan
Adding mowers, RVs, and boats to the mix would take this idea even further. While everyone with a yard needs to mow the grass, owning, maintaining, and storing a lawnmower can be a major hassle. Renting one instead of owning one — or renting out the one you own instead of letting it take up space between trims — could be an attractive option.
Owning a boat or an RV is obviously a much bigger and more expensive scenario than owning a lawnmower. A sharing service for these could be a big draw for owners looking to recoup costs or renters looking for an accessible way to enjoy something that’s too expensive for them to buy.
Right now, these are just possibilities that Maven is batting around. But as GM looks to grow this “personal mobility brand,” these ideas could also represent a promising way to expand its customer base beyond GM vehicle drivers.
