As video game graphics improve and auto brand involvement increases, we’ve seen increasingly impressive renderings of realistic vehicles in game series like Gran Turismo–probably our favorite automotive virtual game here at The News Wheel (mostly because automakers haven’t leapt into the Twisted Metal series for some reason).

We’ve seen plenty of interesting additions to Gran Turismo 6 this year, some taking a realistic approach like the BMW M4 Safety Car, while others have tried to turn their designs into real models.

Mazda fully embraced the opportunity to create a digital racing vehicle that will never wind up in the real world–but that’s what makes the 2015 Mazda LM55 Vision concept so awe-inspiring.

The latest Vision GT addition to the streets of Gran Turismo 6 is inspired by the 1991 Le Mans win by a Mazda 787B–the first Japanese car to win the challenge and the only rotary-powered one to do so.

Mazda LM55 Vision Brings Le Mans History to Gran Turismo

Taking that monumental win in 1991 and pairing the legacy of the 787B with KODO design language has produced a concept vehicle that flaunts its history with gusto.

The automaker had a lot of fun with the aerodynamics of the LM55 Vision’s body while still grounding it with an internal-combustion engine. Our favorite aspects of the 2015 Mazda LM55 Vision are the fierce grille and slim headlights, the shockingly low rear end, and the engine. Oh man, that engine. The Mazda LM55 Vision is worth having in your virtual garage purely for the sound of that 787B under the hood.

In all honesty, this is probably the closest we’ll get to a modern rotary engine since Mazda decided not to resurrect it.
