For the fourth consecutive year, Lexus ranked higher than all other car brands sold in the United States in the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study.

The study, conducted annually, surveys more than 34,000 owners of three-year old cars to determine how many mechanical problems have been observed. Toyota Motor Corporation took seven segment awards as a whole, with the Lexus ES and GX named as most dependable Compact Premium Car and Midsize Premium SUV, respectively. The Lexus ES stood out even further as the highest ranked model of all vehicles in this year’s study.

The Lexus ES in this study is the 2012 model year, the last of the previous generation that shared its platform with the Toyota Camry. This generation of Lexus ES received several awards including Kiplinger’s Best New Car for 2007, Best Midsize Luxury Car from AutoPacific in 2009, and Best Upscale Car for the Money from U.S. News & World Report.

Lexus owners observed only 89 problems per 100 vehicles compared to the second-rated brand, Buick, with 110 problems per 100 vehicles. The most commonly reported problems were Bluetooth connectivity and voice recognition misinterpreting commands. The average for the industry for the 2012 model year was 147 problems per 100 vehicles.

Next year’s dependability study will evaluate the Lexus ES in its current generation, so we’ll see if the reputation continues.
