Lexus RC F GT3 Race Car to Enter International GT3 Racing This Year
Last March at the Geneva Motor Show, Lexus revealed the RC F GT3 Racing Concept car, and so revealed their intentions to enter international Group GT3 racing events. With today’s reveal of the 2016 GS F sedan in Detroit, Lexus brought the car back onto the stage and revealed their intentions to enter GT3 racing as soon as this year.

Although the race car was a neat surprise at NAIAS, this represents an increased commitment by Lexus to develop their high performance F trim by participating in high profile motorsports. That’s a pretty big step for a luxury brand that didn’t even exist until 1989. It might be safe to say that Lexus cars aren’t just dressed-up Toyotas anymore.
Group GT3 can simply be explained as a set of standards for race cars based on grand touring cars that are based on current road-legal production cars. Although the cars can be modified, there is a lot of freedom in engine sizes and layout of the cars, so it’s an opportunity for automakers to see who truly builds the best sports car on the market. By entering the RC F GT3 in these races, Lexus will have a chance to challenge the rest of the automakers in a place where these cars are pushed to the limits of their performance and earn a reputation.

We’re excited to see Lexus get serious about motorsports. Racing is a great place to test new technology that can eventually be applied to production road cars, and direct competition with other automakers is the perfect catalyst for making faster and more powerful road cars.
