Lincoln Aviator Preview

Thursday was a huge day for announcements from Ford—a Bronco Hybrid, Explorer ST, and all-new small off-road SUV were just some of the Blue Oval’s key product reveals. Not to be outdone, Lincoln is making its own splash by announcing on Friday that it will be debuting the all-new Lincoln Aviator SUV later this month at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

The Pinnacle of Luxury: Lincoln Black Label provides exclusive aesthetics, experiences

So what is there to be gleaned from this teaser? Well, it’s got Lincoln lettering—presumably on the tailgate. It’s got an Aviator namebadge—presumably by the front fender. And! It’s got a Lincoln Star smackdab in the center of a mesh grille—a Lincoln Star that lights up, no less.

Automotive News reports that Ford executives confirmed the Lincoln Aviator to be based on the new Ford Explorer, and Ford’s Thursday announcement ostensibly confirms that the Aviator will be offered with a hybrid powertrain option. Lincoln also confirmed that the Aviator will be the first of two all-new SUVs that it will launch over the next two years.

With the Lincoln MKC receiving an extensive refresh for the 2019 model year and the MKX being replaced by the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus, it’s also a fair bet that the arrival of the Lincoln Aviator signals the long-anticipated death of the Lincoln MKT. RIP, MKT. We hardly knew ye, and someone somewhere will certainly miss you.
