Chevy is pretty darn proud of its Malibu stop/start technology, and with good reason. The 2014 Malibu, the first model to receive the Bowtie Brand’s innovate tech, saw a 14 percent increase in city fuel economy (rated at 25 mpg city) with the addition of stop/start.

Customers are obviously pleased with the Malibu stop/start technology. According to J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Survey, drivers of the Malibu ranked the model higher than drivers of all competing models in the segment. And the Malibu’s sales speak for themselves: a whopping 97 percent of all customers who purchased either a 2014 or a 2015 Chevy Malibu opted for the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that comes standard with stop/start tech. Reportedly, this marks the most aggressive rollout of this technology in the United States by one of the Big Three automakers.

The benefits of the Malibu stop/start technology are palpable. No fuel is wasted when the car is idling, and it takes just 337 milliseconds for the engine to restart (Chevy compares this to the blink of an eye) when the driver is finished idling (like at a red light or waiting to pick someone up in their driveway). The technology is absolutely crucial to the eco movement. Sustainable America reports that the average driver in the U.S. spends 16 minutes a day idling—or four days a year! This equates to 3.8 million gallons of gas wasted in the United States every day because of idling, according to The Hinkle Charitable Foundation.

The stop/start technology has also extended to the 2015 Impala sedan, improving fuel efficiency by 5 percent.
