Man Found in Car 6 Hours After Crash
The aftermath of a New Year’s crash and the scene of a mystery

You know that old chestnut: “[some object that you have misplaced] is always in the last place you look.” Police in Dayton, OH may have benefitted from keeping that old axiom close-to-heart during their search for a driver involved in a car accident on New Year’s Day.
According to WHIO, a Chevrolet Impala crashed into a utility pole and plowed through the fence at Willowview Cemetery at about 3 am on New Year’s Day. When Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene, they were unable to find the driver of the vehicle. Harrison Township fire joined the search for the driver, which ended at 4:30 am when the crews could find neither hide nor hair.
Come 9 am that same morning, a tow truck driver went to the Impala—now secured in the lot of Busy Bee Auto Parts and Towing Inc.—to throw debris from the crash into the vehicle when he heard a man shouting for help. There, on the front floorboard of the car, he found the missing driver suffering from a leg injury.

“To tell you the truth, I don’t know if this guy came back to his car and climbed in it,” the worker told emergency dispatchers.
The driver, as-yet unnamed, is in critical condition at Grandview Medical Center.
It’s not entirely clear if the officers, fire crew, and tow company employees all failed to look inside the car during their search or if the man indeed exited the vehicle and returned at a later time.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jeremy Roy said that a full investigation is underway and could take up to 45 days to complete. Roy did not mention if alcohol could have played any role in the accident.
